A mixed number's whole part never changes. Only the fraction part gets rewritten, either as decimal digits after the point or as a fraction over a power of ten.

Why Convert Between Forms at All?
A mixed number and its decimal form describe the same amount but suit different tasks. A recipe, a tape measure, or a woodworking plan reads naturally in mixed numbers — "3 5/8 inches" separates whole units from the leftover part at a glance. A spreadsheet, a calculator display, or a price tag reads naturally as a decimal, since decimals compare and sort the way ordinary numbers do without any extra mental work.
That's the entire reason a converter like this one is useful rather than optional: neither form is more "correct" than the other, and plenty of real tasks — reading a ruler, then typing the length into a spreadsheet — need both within the same few minutes.
The numerator and denominator never stop meaning what they always meant during this process. The denominator still says how many equal parts make one whole unit, and the numerator still counts how many of those parts are present — the conversion just repackages that same relationship as digits sitting in specific place-value columns after the decimal point, tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on.
That place-value link is also what decides whether a decimal terminates or repeats. Whenever a denominator's only prime factors are 2 and 5 — halves, quarters, eighths, fifths, tenths — it divides evenly into some power of ten and the decimal terminates cleanly. Any other denominator, like thirds, sixths, or sevenths, never divides evenly into a power of ten, so its decimal repeats forever and has to be truncated for display, even though the mixed number itself stays perfectly exact.
