    Where Percents Actually Get Used

    A percent is nothing more than a proportion rescaled to a common base of one hundred, which is exactly what makes it so useful for comparing rates that started out with completely different denominators. A discount of 1/4 off and a discount of 3/10 off are not obviously comparable at a glance, but written as 25% and 30% the larger one is immediately clear — no shared denominator needs to be found first.

    Interest rates work the same way. A loan or savings account quoted as "1 1/20 per year" would be an unusual way to communicate a rate, but "105% per year," or more commonly just the growth portion, "5% per year," is immediately readable and comparable against any other account regardless of the amount of money involved.

    Statistics and grading rely on the same rescaling. A test score of 17 out of 20 correct answers is a fraction, 17/20, that most people cannot instantly place on a quality scale — but converted to 85% it maps directly onto a familiar, consistent grading scheme that works identically whether the test had 20 questions or 200. Survey results, sports statistics, and population figures are reported as percents for the same reason: the base is always 100, so any two percents can be compared directly without knowing the original sample size.

    The mixed-number form stays valuable even after a percent has been calculated, because it's the form that separates a whole quantity from its leftover part — a growth rate of 225% is much easier to picture as "more than double, plus a quarter more" once it's written back as 2 1/4.

    Why does "percent" mean "per hundred"?

    The word comes from the Latin "per centum," literally "per hundred." A percent rescales any proportion so it is always measured against the same base of 100, which is why 50% and 1/2 describe the exact same amount — 50 parts out of 100 versus 1 part out of 2.

    Can a percent be greater than 100%?

    Yes. A percent over 100% simply means the quantity is more than one whole. 1 1/4 converts to 125%, and 3 1/2 converts to 350% — the whole-number part of the mixed number is exactly what pushes the percent past 100.

    What does a negative percent mean?

    A negative percent describes a quantity below zero, such as a temperature drop or a loss. −1 1/2 converts to −150%, and the sign carries through every step of the conversion rather than attaching only to the whole-number part.
